At Kents Hill Infant Academy, our School Council plays an integral role in fostering leadership skills and promoting a sense of responsibility among our students. This dedicated group of young representatives voices the opinions and ideas of their peers, helping to shape the school’s environment and culture. Through engaging in various projects and initiatives, the School Council cultivates teamwork, decision-making, and communication skills, empowering each child to contribute positively to our community.
Being part of the School Council fosters a sense of belonging and engagement, as students work collaboratively towards common goals that reflect the values of respect and inclusivity we uphold at Kents Hill. We are proud to see our children’s ideas come to life, enhancing their educational experience and reinforcing the importance of active participation in their school life.
What does it mean to be in School Council?
The School Council are a group of pupils at Kents Hill Academy who are elected through a democratic process of presentations and voting. Councillors are elected by their fellow pupils to represent their opinions and raise issues with the Headteacher and key members of the school.
They meet regularly with Mrs Toogood and work collaboratively to take forward projects on behalf of the pupils and be involved in planning and improving the school environment.A school councillor is someone who is passionate about making a change. They are confident to express their views and represent their class. Overall, they want to make the school a better place to be for everyone.
To be effective, our school council must:
- Represent all pupils and include as many people as possible.
- Take time to listen to all pupils and communicate their views.
- Feedback to pupils about what happened about their views.
- Make things happen – or explain why they can’t!
Examples of School projects have included:
- Fundraising for local causes.
- Gathering food parcels for local food banks.
- Selceting new playground equipment.
- Sending kindness to local care homes
- Working with the local organisation
- United in Kind.
- Setting up a terracycle project in school.
