Miss Rebecca Carter Leads English at Kents Hill Infant Academy.

Hello I am Miss Carter and I am the Phonics and English Lead at Kents Hill Infant school. I have always had a passion and desire for phonics as it is the foundation and building blocks for all learning. The children need to be able to identify initials sounds before they are able to blend words and read sentences. The excitement and self achievement the children have as they develop and master their reading and writing skills is priceless.

Reading

Reading is the foundation of our ability to learn and function in an ever-changing society. Being able to read allows children to access all areas of the curriculum- to read tasks and information, to understand and comprehend content. Reading supplements children’s abilities to write, it supports their development of ideas and imagination. The more a child reads, the greater their ability to select powerful vocabulary for writing, the more successful they are at spelling and the more consistent they are with their grammar.

Reading is a pleasurable experience. Is there anything better than snuggling down with a good book? Reading allows us to escape, to find out about different lands and times without leaving our safe places. Reading ­ allow us to feel connected with others and part of something bigger than ourselves. Reading allows us to imagine how we want our lives to be and where we want to go.

Writing

Writing in our school is also led by Mrs Kenrick as it is a top priority for our school:

My name is Mrs Kenrick. I am the Writing lead at Kents Hill Infant Academy. I have been teaching for over 20 years and in that time I have been inspired by many authors, inspirational teachers and industry experts in the field of English.

Now I love sharing my expertise with the teaching team and seeing the children’s learning and writing going from strength to strength.
